Year-Round Action
Nosara offers fishing throughout the year, with different species in each season. Here is a general guide to what you can expect, firsthand from our local captains. Conditions and catches vary.
December – April
- December
- The water warms and both sailfish and marlin pick up. Marlin average 250 to 400 lb.
- January
- Marlin pick up hard. Sailfish steady rather than thick: one a day, sometimes five or ten. A good day is one to four fish, and some weeks there is nothing.
- February
- Strong for marlin and sailfish, though it turns on the moon and can change overnight. Inshore slows, because the water clears and roosterfish and cubera want it green.
- March
- Sailfish in numbers, close in. They come to within two to five miles, over 200 to 500 feet of water, which is when the tournaments run.
- April
- Sailfish hold and the sardine arrives. Wahoo and tuna follow it close to the coast, and jacks and roosterfish push it onto the beach.
May – July
- May
- Like April until the sardine finishes, usually around Semana Santa. While it lasts the fish are full and hard to tempt. After it, tuna get easier. The rains start.
- June
- Humid, and the weather changes fast. One of the two best months for the biggest yellowfin, over 200 lb. Floating structure holds big dorado and the live bait for marlin.
- July
- The other big tuna month. Bottom fishing is good for cabrilla and pargo seda, four to seven miles out in 300 to 500 feet.
August – October
- August
- Rain, some days hard. Good sized tuna but harder to find. Almost no sailfish, marlin or dorado. Slow, and Jordanny says so.
- September
- The same. The slowest stretch of the year on this coast.
- October
- The rivers run and push dirty water and wood a long way out, so the tuna sit well offshore. The season proper starts at the end of the month.
November
- November
- The water cleans up as the rains end. More sailfish, the odd marlin, and sometimes big dorado in numbers. Yellowfin sit 15 to 25 miles out, further than the usual 8 to 15.
