Marine Wildlife

Whales, dolphins and marine life

Dolphins are here most of the year and turtles turn up on the way out. Humpbacks migrate through August to November, and mothers with calves sit close in on the calm mornings.

The detail

Humpback season
August to November, with some sightings January to March.
Dolphins
Most of the year.
Departure
The captain sets the time to the tide, the wind and the visibility that day. He will tell you when you book.
No promises
These are wild animals. The captain knows where they have been that week and goes there. Nobody can guarantee a sighting and we will not pretend otherwise.

Humpbacks migrate past this coast every year, and the dolphins live here. Three hours out of Playa Garza in the water they both use, with a captain who knows where they have been the week you ask.

What is included

Fresh tropical fruit, snacks, and a selection of cold beverages: coconut water, beer, sodas, and water.

Internationally certified captains and bilingual crew, with licensed and insured operations.

Three-quarter and full-day trips include lunch.

Fishing charters include all tackle and the necessary fishing licenses.

Sailfish, roosterfish and marlin are released. What you keep, the crew cleans and ices for you to take with you.

What is out there

Two animals with two different rhythms, and a coast that holds a lot besides them.

Humpbacks, August to November

They come past on migration. The main window off Garza is August to November, with a second and thinner run of sightings January to March. Mothers with calves tend to sit closer in and stay shallower, so the calm mornings in the middle of the season are the ones to take.

Dolphins are the reliable part

Spotted and bottlenose dolphins are in this water most of the year and travel in numbers. One of the reviews on the home page describes a boat surrounded by them for hours. That is not a typical morning, and it is not a rare one either.

And the rest of it

Turtles surface on the run out. Rays and the occasional manta show up closer to the rocks. Three hours in the sun is longer than it sounds if you are standing the whole time, so the shade on board matters more than people expect.

When to come

Whales run on a calendar. Everything else out here does not, which is the part most people are surprised by.

Aug to NovThe main humpback window off Garza. Mothers with calves sit closer in and stay shallower, which is what makes the calm mornings in the middle of the season the ones worth taking.
Jan to MarA second run, thinner than the first. Sightings rather than a season.
All yearSpotted and bottlenose dolphins, turtles on the surface, rays and the occasional manta closer to the rocks.

What we will not tell you

That you will see a whale.

These are wild animals moving through open ocean. What the captain does is know where they have been in the days before, take you there, and read the water once you are out. Some mornings that means an hour with a mother and calf. Some mornings it means dolphins and turtles and no humpback at all. Bring a hat, reef safe sunscreen and a camera you do not mind getting wet. The light is cleaner early.
